Columbus-Belmont State Park is 2 blks. w. on SR 58. During the Civil War this fortified point was known as the “Gibraltar of the West.” The 1861 Battle of Belmont, the opening confrontation of the Union's Western campaign, saw the Confederates stretch a massive chain across the river to try to halt Union gunboats. The chain, its 6-ton anchor, artillery relics, a cannon and restored battle trenches can be seen.
