AAA Editor Notes

State Capitol is 5 blks. s. on Capitol Ave. Set between two bluffs overlooking Frankfort, the capitol is considered to be one of the most beautiful in the country. The exterior is of Indiana limestone on a base of Vermont granite. The walls of the 1910 building are ornamented with 70 Ionic columns. The pediment over the north entrance is noteworthy, and there are several fine sculpture groups. A brochure outlining a walking tour of the capitol grounds is available. The interior, finished in marble and accented with murals and paintings, is noted for its French influence. The rotunda and dome were copied from the Hotel des Invalides over Napoleon Bonaparte’s tomb; the stairs resemble those in the Paris Grand Opéra House; and the State Reception Room is modeled after Marie Antoinette’s drawing room and features original hand-carved walnut furniture and infinity mirrors.
