AAA Editor Notes
Carter Caves State Resort Park, 5 mi. from I-64 exit 161 via US 60 and SR 182 to 344 Caveland Dr., sits above more than 20 caverns. Settlers found the cave region—distinguished by rock cliffs, natural bridges and a mountain lake—in the 1780s. The Bat Cave Nature Preserve has a flourishing population of an endangered species of bat.
Nature trails, guided cave tours and guided canoe trips are available.
Note: Two of the park's caves—Horn Hollow and Laurel—are temporarily closed due to the threat of White-Nose syndrome. Bat, Cascade, Saltpeter and X-Cave remain open for tours.
Food is available.
