Carter Caves State Resort Park, 5 mi. from I-64 exit 161 via US 60 and SR 182 to 344 Caveland Dr., sits above more than 20 caverns. Settlers found the cave region—distinguished by rock cliffs, natural bridges and a mountain lake—in the 1780s. The Bat Cave Nature Preserve has a flourishing population of an endangered species of bat. Nature trails, guided cave tours and guided canoe trips are available. Note: Two of the park's caves—Horn Hollow and Laurel—are temporarily closed due to the threat of White-Nose syndrome. Bat, Cascade, Saltpeter and X-Cave remain open for tours. Food is available.
Park free. Cave tours $7-$10; $4-$5 (ages 3-12).
Hours: Park open daily 24 hours. Welcome center open daily 9-6, in summer; 9-5, rest of year. Guided cave tours depart from the welcome center several times daily. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
