Blue Heron Mining Community is 9 mi. w. off US 27 on SR 742 (Mine 18 Rd.), within the Big South Fork National River and Recreation Area. Mine 18, as it is locally known, is a re-creation of a mining community in existence 1937-62.
The abandoned town’s story is told through audio recordings at each of the metal building sheds constructed on the sites of several of the original buildings. The voices on the tapes are those of people who actually lived in the community and worked in Mine 18.
