McCreary County Museum at Stearns, 1 mi. w. of US 27 on Wilburn K. Ross Rd., then 1 blk. n. of scenic railway parking lot, is in the 1907 office building of the Stearns Coal & Lumber Co. The museum has replicas of 19th-century kitchens and of a country general store. Displays include a moonshine still, Native American artifacts, early mining and lumbering tools, railway memorabilia and metal and paper scrip. A genealogy section contains information about neighboring counties. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
$5; $4 (ages 60+); $3 (ages 5-12). A combination ticket with the Big South Fork Scenic Railway is available.
Hours: Wed.-Sat. 9-4, Sun. 11-4, May-Oct.; Thurs.-Sat. 9-4, in Apr.; Thurs.-Sat. 11-4, in Nov.; by appointment rest of year.
