Fort Duffield is on Dixie Hwy. (US 31W) at Salt River Rd. in Fort Duffield Park. This Civil War Union fort, reached by a steep .25-mile hike, was built on orders from Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman in 1861. A walking tour explains the history of the earthen fortifications and Fort Duffield. The fort cemetery is just south. A memorial cemetery is situated on the adjacent hill southwest of the fort.
Visitors enjoy panoramas of the Ohio River, with the hills of southern Indiana providing a scenic backdrop. The park also has 10 miles of trails suitable for hiking, walking and mountain biking. Special living-history programs are available occasionally.
Picnicking is permitted.
