Fort Duffield is on Dixie Hwy. (US 31W) at Salt River Rd. in Fort Duffield Park. This Civil War Union fort, reached by a steep .25-mile hike, was built on orders from Gen. William Tecumseh Sherman in 1861. A walking tour explains the history of the earthen fortifications and Fort Duffield. The fort cemetery is just south.
Visitors enjoy panoramas of the Ohio River, with the hills of southern Indiana providing a scenic backdrop. The park also has 10 miles of trails suitable for hiking, walking and mountain biking.
