The Big Well Museum & Visitors Center

The Big Well Museum & Visitors Center, 315 S. Sycamore St., is home to what is said to be the largest hand-dug well in the world. It measures 32 feet in diameter and is 109 feet deep. Work began in 1887 by the city and the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway, which hoped to use the water for its steam-powered engines and to supply the town with water. The well was completed in 1888 and provided water for the town until 1932. Visitors descend an 84-step stairway to the bottom of the well.

The museum also houses a pallasite meteorite, one of the largest ever discovered. Consisting mainly of iron and stone and weighing more than 1,000 pounds, the meteorite was found on a nearby farm in 1949. A special exhibit tells the story of the 2007 tornado that destroyed 95 percent of Greensburg and how the town rebuilt as a sustainable community.
