State Capitol, on Capitol Sq. between Jackson and Harrison sts. facing 8th Ave., contains murals by Kansas native John Steuart Curry as well as artists David H. Overmyer, Lumen Martin Winter and Michael Young. Interesting outdoor sculptures include the “Pioneer Mother” and a bronze of Abraham Lincoln by Robert Merrill Gage.

The capitol, built with native limestone and classically inspired, dates from 1866. Atop the dome is the 22-foot-high statue of Ad Astra, a Kansa Indian warrior, after whose tribe the state was named. During the 50-minute guided historical tour, visitors see the Representative Hall, Senate chamber, former Supreme Court chamber and governor's ceremonial office. The 40-minute dome tour affords panoramic views and an up-close look at the dome's architectural features; visitors must climb 296 steps.

Guided tours are available.
