Bernheim Arboretum and Research Forest is 1 mi. e. of jct. I-65 and SR 245 exit 112. The nonprofit site consists of 16,000 acres of forest and a 600-acre arboretum with three lakes, more than 40 miles of hiking trails and 16 miles of paved road for biking. Isaac W. Bernheim, a German immigrant who made his fortune in the distillery business, founded the natural area in 1929 as a gift to Kentuckians.

The arboretum features more than 8,000 labeled varieties of plants and trees, including a collection of American, Japanese and deciduous hollies. The Visitor Center, known as “a building like a tree,” features a living green roof and interactive exhibits on sustainability.

More than 250 species of birds may be seen on the property, which is adorned with such nature-inspired artwork as sculptures made from metal, stone and other natural materials. Visitors may also experience life in the treetops on the Canopy Tree Walk; a nearby valley is visible from the 75-foot-high structure during winter months.

Educational programs are available.

Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
