AAA Editor Notes
The Filson Historical Society, 1310 S. 3rd St., was named for John Filson, who in 1784 published the first history of Kentucky. One of the state’s oldest historical societies, it is known for its extensive collection of antebellum portraits; manuscripts, photos and prints; and its library. A museum in the mansion’s carriage house contains a collection of items imparting Kentucky history.

The society’s 1905 elegant Beaux Arts mansion can be seen on a self-guiding tour.
