The Speed Art Museum, 2035 S. 3rd St., is next to the University of Louisville campus, .75 mi. w. off I-65 Eastern Pkwy. exit. Founded in 1925, the museum has works more than 6,000 years old in its collection, including art from ancient Egypt to contemporary pieces. The building, recently renovated, is considered one of the finest neoclassic structures in the South. New features include the North Building, the South Building and cinema, and the art park and piazza on the grounds.

Displays include modern and old masters paintings and sculptures, European tapestries, furniture, decorative art, American Indian objects, African cultural exhibits and contemporary works as well as a 16th-century English Renaissance room.

The Laramie L. Leatherman Art Learning Center offers hands-on exhibits. Art Sparks, the center’s interactive core, contains interactive stations that educates visitors. The museum also offers special traveling exhibitions.
