Poverty Point National Monument and World Heritage Site is 4.25 mi. e. on SR 134, then 1 mi. n. on SR 577. The 400-acre site preserves one of the earliest and largest prehistoric settlements discovered in North America. The complex of earthen mounds dates 1700-700 B.C. The central structure is a semicircular array of concentric ridges three-quarters of a mile in diameter. An outlying bird-shaped mound is 70 feet high. The site has a museum with interpretive displays and a 2.6-mile hiking trail, and guided tram tours are offered.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 2 hours minimum.
