St. Joseph Plantation is off I-10 exit 194, 5 mi. s. on SR 641 to Veterans Memorial Bridge, then 7 mi. w. to 3535 SR 18. Built circa 1830 and family-owned since 1877, this working sugarcane plantation includes the Creole manor house, a detached kitchen, slave cabins and other dependencies. A square baby grand piano and an 1840 Melodeon organ are among the period furnishings. Renowned architect Henry Hobson Richardson was born on the property in 1838, at which time it was known as Priestly Plantation.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
