BREC's Magnolia Mound Plantation is at 2161 Nicholson Dr. The 1791 French-Creole home once was the centerpiece of a 950-acre cotton plantation. Furnished with Federal-style pieces from the 1800s, the house is surrounded by 16 acres of oak trees, some more than 200 years old. Other structures on-site include a slave cabin and a pigeonnier, an outbuilding used to house squab and game birds. The working plantation grows much of the produce that is prepared during open-hearth cooking presentations. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
$10; $8 (ages 65+ and college students, teachers and military with ID); $4 (ages 3-17). Self-guiding tour $3 (grounds only).
Hours: Mon.-Sat. 10-4, Sun. 1-4. Last tour begins 1 hour before closing. Cooking demonstrations offered some Tues. and Thurs., Oct.-May. Closed major holidays. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
