Cameron Prairie National Wildlife Refuge is 6 mi. w. on SR 14, then 12 mi. s. to 1428 SR 27. Migrating and wintering bird species inhabit the 24,548-acre refuge, which includes salt marsh, coastal prairie and old rice fields. The refuge comprises two separate units, the freshwater Gibbstown area and East Cove, a salt marsh open only to boats. The Gibbstown visitor center offers a small animatronic exhibit about Cajun life, a bird checklist and an alligator pond. A 3-mile self-guiding wildlife drive also is available.
