German-American Cultural Center is off US 90 Bus. Rte. exit 7 at 519 Huey P. Long Ave. This museum chronicles the German settlers who came from the Rhine River valley to the French colony of Louisiana beginning in the 1720s. Lured by the promises of rich fields and gold, some 1,600 Germans set sail from France; only 300 survived the journey and their first year in Louisiana. A research room also is available that includes records from more than 20 New Orleans area churches.
