Mansfield State Historic Site is 3 mi. s.e. at 15149 SR 175. The 178-acre site commemorates the climactic battle of the Red River campaign of April 8, 1864, when Gen. Richard Taylor and his Confederate troops drove Union forces back to Alexandria. The battle saved Shreveport and the Red River territory for the South and prevented the war from moving onward toward Texas. A museum features exhibits and battle relics as well as a theater offering an audiovisual presentation about the battle. The site contains a battlefield walking trail with interpretive markers and monuments.
Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
