Boston Harbor Islands National Recreation Area encompasses 34 islands in Boston Harbor; ferries depart from Long Wharf in downtown Boston. Totaling 1,200 acres of land within 50 square miles, the park is managed by the Boston Harbor Islands Partnership comprising 11 different agencies. Spectacular views of the Boston skyline are afforded, as are such recreational activities as boating, hiking, kayaking and swimming. Educational opportunities include guided history tours and nature walks.

Staffed by park rangers, a visitor information pavilion on the Rose Fitzgerald Kennedy Greenway opposite Faneuil Hall Marketplace has interpretive panels describing the islands as well as ferry information, schedules and tickets. Ferries traveling to the islands also depart from Hingham and South Boston, and some portions of the recreation area are accessible via automobile or private boat. From late June through Labor Day, camping is permitted at Grape, Bumpkin, Peddocks and Lovells islands, with Peddocks Island offering wood-framed yurt structures.

Note: A carry-in, carry-out policy is in effect, and there are no trash receptacles on the islands. Restroom facilities are available on Spectacle, Georges and Peddocks islands; Grape, Bumpkin, and Lovells islands have composting toilets only. Food is available seasonally on Georges and Spectacle islands. Pets are not permitted.

Guided tours are available. Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
