Museum of African American History is at 46 Joy St. The African Meeting House was dedicated in 1806 and is said to be the oldest extant church built by free African Americans in the United States. The adjacent Abiel Smith School is the nation's first building constructed for the sole purpose of educating African American children. Permanent and changing exhibits are featured.

Maps detailing a self-guiding tour of the Black Heritage Trail, which links 14 historic sites, are available at the museum. Guided gallery and walking tours also are offered.
