Naumkeag, 5 mi. n. of US 7 and SR 102 at 5 Prospect Hill Rd. This was the summer estate of Joseph Choate, an attorney and the ambassador to Britain 1899-1905. Designed by the architectural firm McKim, Mead and White, this Berkshire cottage, accessible via guided tour, contains the Choate family's original furnishings.
Self-guiding tours of the gardens, which were designed by Fletcher Steele and Mabel Choate and include a Chinese temple garden, are available. Also featured are Steele's Blue Steps, a chain of fountain pools surrounded by four levels of stairs.
