AAA Editor Notes

Fort Knox State Historic Site is at 740 Fort Knox Rd. The pentagon-shaped fort was built on 125 acres overlooking the Penobscot River in the 1840s-60s as a deterrent to future British attempts to recapture Bangor and to control the river. The granite fort displays eight cannons and contains mounts for 64 cannons. Fort Knox garrisoned troops during the Civil and Spanish-American wars, yet the fort was never threatened. Such events as periodic Civil War musters and medieval tournaments occur on the grounds. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
