Margaret Chase Smith Library, 56 Norridgewock Ave., offers displays about the life and career of Margaret Chase Smith, a prominent Maine politician who completed 32 years in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate and ran for president in 1964.

Smith is known for her “Declaration of Conscience,” delivered in the Senate in 1950, in which she stated her opposition to Senator Joseph McCarthy's anticommunist crusade. She was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1989.
