Vaughan Woods State Park, off SR 236 to 28 Oldfields Rd. on the e. bank of Salmon Falls River, contains 165 wooded acres interspersed with 3.5 miles of marked foot trails. According to legend, the Pied Cow landed at Cow Cove in 1634, bringing the East Coast its first cows. Later that year the same ship brought the nation one of its first sawmills, which was erected nearby. Snowshoeing is a popular winter activity; rental snowshoes are available.
