Matthews Museum of Maine Heritage, off SR 17 at the Union Fairgrounds at Fairgrounds Lane and Common Road, displays more than 10,000 artifacts relevant to Maine life, including antique tools, vehicles and kitchen utensils as well as innovative, homemade inventions reflecting the ingenuity and craftsmanship of Maine's early settlers. Of interest is the extensive collection of Moxie memorabilia, including a 32-foot-tall Moxie bottle stand. A one-room schoolhouse that operated 1864-1954 houses original furnishings and supplies. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.

Hours: Wed.-Sat. noon-4, July-Aug.; by appointment in June and Sept. Closed major holidays.
