Wells National Estuarine Research Reserve / Wells Reserve at Laudholm is off I-95 (Maine Tpke.) exit 19, 1 mi. e. to US 1 (following signs), 1.5 mi. n. to Laudholm Farm Rd., then .5 mi. e., following signs. An educational, research and recreational facility occupies a 19th-century saltwater farm with Greek Revival architecture. Coastal-themed exhibits are displayed.

The 2,250-acre preserve offers 7 miles of hiking and cross-country skiing trails, providing access to the woodlands, fields, wetlands, beach and dunes. Trail maps are available at the visitor center and the entry kiosk.

Note: Pets are not permitted.

Guided tours are available.

Memorial Day weekend-Columbus Day $5; $1 (ages 6-16). Rest of year by donation. Guided tour fees vary; phone ahead.

Reserve daily 7 a.m.-dusk. Visitor center Mon.-Sat. 10-4, Sun. noon-4, Memorial Day weekend-Columbus Day; Mon.-Fri. 10-4, Apr. 1-day before Memorial Day weekend and day after Columbus Day-Dec. 15; by appointment rest of year. Phone for guided tour schedule. Allow 2 hours minimum.
