York Factory National Historic Site is 250 km (150 mi.) s.e. near the mouth of the Hayes River; access to the site is limited to charter plane or boat. The site was established by the Hudson's Bay Co. as part of a series of fur-trading posts. The 1821 depot is the oldest wooden structure still standing on permafrost. Self-guiding tours of the site feature reconstructed buildings containing area artifacts.

Visitors should contact Parks Canada for transportation and safety information. Facilities at the site are limited; camping is permitted in fenced compound.

Time: Allow 4 hours minimum.
