Sandilands Forest Discovery Centre (Manitoba Forestry Association), about 2 km (1.2 mi.) s. of jct. hwys. 1 and 11, tells visitors about forest conservation, reforestation and fire prevention. A train car used 1919-74 to promote the nationwide planting of trees is shown, an electronic display tests tree species knowledge and a museum has area plants and animals, and hand-carvings of Smokey Bear. The Old Beaver Dam Trail, reached by a suspension bridge over the Whitemouth River, penetrates aspen parkland and a boreal forest. The Sagimay Trail contains chainsaw sculptures while the Dawson Cabin shows heritage forest firefighting and forest management equipment.
Guided tours of the center are available.
