Royal Canadian Mint is at 520 Lagimodière Blvd. at jct. Trans-Canada Hwy. and Hwy. 59. This high-tech, high-volume manufacturing facility is considered one of the world's most modern mints; its high-speed coining presses can each strike 750 coins per minute. The Winnipeg mint produces all circulation coinage for Canada as well as coinage for more than 75 foreign countries.
Guided tours explain the coin manufacturing process and allow access to the second floor, where large windows offer a peek down into various production rooms where coins are pressed, sorted and packaged. The ground floor is open to the public and includes a landscaped interior courtyard, a gift shop, windows that look into the packaging room and an exhibit which lets visitors pull a lever to lift a gold bar worth more than $600,000.
