AAA Editor Notes
Clara Barton National Historic Site, 5801 Oxford Rd., was the home of the founder and first president of the American Red Cross from 1897 until her death in 1912, and served as the early headquarters of that organization. Built according to the floor plan of a Red Cross relief structure used after the flood of 1889 at Johnstown, Pa., the 1891 house is furnished with some items that once belonged to Barton.
Note: The site is temporarily closed for renovations and is expected to reopen in 2017; phone ahead for updates and tour information.
