Washington Monument State Park, 147 acres at 6620 Zittlestown Rd., is along the Appalachian Trail. The restored 34-foot stone monument and observation tower, erected in 1827, commemorates George Washington. Visitors can go inside the tower and climb to the top. A museum contains Civil War artifacts and exhibits about the history of the monument. Pets on leash are allowed. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 30 minutes minimum.
$3 (per private out-of-state vehicle); $2 (per private in-state vehicle).
Hours: Park daily 8-dusk, Apr.-Oct.; 10-dusk, rest of year. Museum Thurs.-Mon. 9-5, early May-late Sept.; Sat.-Sun. 9-5, early Apr.-early May and late Sept.-late Oct. Closed Christmas. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
