Point Lookout State Park is on SR 5 at 11175 Point Lookout Rd. A popular resort before the Civil War, the park is on a peninsula that forms the southern tip of Maryland's western shore. During the war, nearby Camp Hoffman housed more than 52,000 Confederate prisoners; more than 4,000 died from exposure, starvation and disease. There is a beach, fishing pier, picnic area and lighthouse as well as nature trails. A visitor center features a nature center and Civil War history museum. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
Day-use fee Sat.-Sun. and holidays May-Sept. $5-$7 (per person); $2.50-$3.50 (veterans with ID); free (children in car seats and active military with ID). Day-use fee rest of year $3-$5 (per private vehicle); $1-$2 (veterans with ID).
Hours: Park daily dawn-dusk. Visitor center, museum and nature center open Sat.-Sun. 9-5, Memorial Day-Labor Day; phone ahead to confirm additional hours.
