Point Lookout State Park is 4.5 mi. s. on SR 5. A popular resort before the Civil War, the park is on a peninsula that forms the southern tip of Maryland's western shore. During the war, nearby Camp Hoffman housed more than 52,000 Confederate prisoners; more than 4,000 died from exposure, starvation and disease. There is a beach, fishing pier, picnic area, nature center and nature trails. A museum features Civil War history. Pets on leash are allowed. Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
Day-use fee Sat.-Sun. and holidays May-Sept. $5-$7 (per person); free (children in car seats and active military with ID). Day-use fee rest of year $3-$5 (per private vehicle).
Hours: Park daily dawn-dusk. Museum and nature center open Sat.-Sun. 9-5, Memorial Day-Labor Day; phone ahead to confirm additional hours.
