Point Lookout State Park is on SR 5 at 11175 Point Lookout Rd. A popular resort before the Civil War, the park is on a peninsula that forms the southern tip of Maryland's western shore. During the war, nearby Camp Hoffman housed more than 52,000 Confederate prisoners; more than 4,000 died from exposure, starvation and disease. There is a beach, fishing pier, picnic area and lighthouse as well as nature trails. A visitor center features a nature center and Civil War history museum.
