Antietam National Battlefield Visitor Center, 1 mi. n. of Sharpsburg on SR 65 at 5831 Dunker Church Rd., at the battlefield entrance, has exhibits pertaining to this significant Civil War conflict. Five oil murals by Capt. James Hope, a battle participant, illustrate various Antietam battle scenes. A 25-minute film and ranger-led interpretive talks are offered daily. Guided tours designed for families with children also are available. Self-guiding driving tour brochures and hiking maps are available at the visitor center desk. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
Visitor center (movie, exhibits and ranger programs) $5; free (ages 0-15); $10 (per private vehicle with more than two people). Guided tour $65 (2-hour); $95 (3-hour). Advance reservations are required for guided tours.
Hours: Daily 9-5. The film is shown every half-hour 9-4. Ranger-led talks daily at 10 and 1:30. Additional presentations may be scheduled in summer; phone ahead. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
