Julia A. Purnell Museum is at 208 W. Market St. at jct. Water St. Housed in an 1891 building which was originally a church, the museum was founded in 1942 by Snow Hill native Julia A. Purnell and her son, William. Initially, the museum presented embroidery, quilts and other needle arts and crafts Mrs. Purnell created, as well as equipment and tools she used.

It now features Victorian-era clothing, household items, jewelry, toys, and Native American and other artifacts. Changing exhibits showcasing pieces from local artists and collectors may be seen throughout the year.
