Jefferson Patterson Park and Museum is at 10515 Mackall Rd. (SR 265), following signs. This State Museum of Archeology showcases regional archeology and history on 560 acres along the Patuxent River. There are more than 70 recorded archeological sites. The visitor center houses exhibits, a theater room and the Discovery Room. An exhibit barn contains a War of 1812 display. The park includes interpretive walking and driving trails, a canoe and kayak launch, a Woodland Indian Village and The Maryland Archaeological Conservation Laboratory. The 1933 Colonial Revival-style Patterson house and gardens also are on the grounds. Special events are held throughout the year. Audio tours are available by cellphone. Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted.

Hours: Grounds and trails daily 7:30-dusk. House tours are given Mon. at 10 and 1, early Mar. to mid-Dec. Visitor center open daily 10-5, Mar.-Nov.; by appointment rest of year. Exhibit barn Tues. and Fri.-Sun. noon-4, Apr.-Oct. Laboratory tours are offered Thurs. at 11 and 1 (also the first Fri. of the month at 1, year-round), Apr.-Nov. Phone ahead to confirm off-season hours. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
