Historic St. Mary's City, off SR 5 at 18751 Hogaboom Ln., is an 800-acre museum of archeology and living history. Exhibits include a square-rigged ship, a tobacco plantation, a town center, a brick chapel, a Woodland Indian hamlet and the St. John's Site Museum. Costumed or uniformed interpreters in re-created 17th-century settings illustrate life in Colonial Maryland.

The visitor center offers a 10-minute orientation video, brochures, maps, and the “…once the Metropolis of Maryland” exhibit, which displays artifacts found in the area over the past 40 years. The grounds also include gardens, picnic areas and more than 3 miles of waterside and wooded trails. Special events offer opportunities for visitors to work in conjunction with archeologists at site excavations, try a bow and arrow and observe militia drills and other reenactments.

Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 3 hours minimum.
