Yiddish Book Center, at 1021 West St. on the campus of Hampshire College, preserves more than 1.5 million books written in Yiddish. The center is housed in a building designed to look like a 19th-century shtetl, iconic Jewish towns in Eastern Europe. In addition to Yiddish texts, the center houses permanent and temporary displays, which range from photographic histories to exhibitions about Jewish authors. Educational programs also are offered, and the grounds of the facility include meditation gardens. Guided tours are available.
Hours: Sun.-Fri. 10-4. Guided tours are given Tues. at 2, Sun. at 11 and 1. Closed Jewish and legal holidays. Phone ahead to confirm schedule. Allow 2 hours minimum.
