Charles River Reservation extends along both sides of the Charles River from the Charles River Dam in downtown Boston to the Watertown Dam. The linear park encompasses multiple green spaces, memorials and historic sites. Within the 961-acre reservation are bicycle paths, swimming and wading pools, tennis courts, playing fields and fitness courses. Canoeing, kayaking and sculling are offered May through October. Sailing and windsurfing also can be enjoyed in season. On the Boston side of the river is the approximately 3-mile-long Esplanade, home to the landmark Hatch Memorial Shell. Completed in 1940, the outdoor venue situated between the Longfellow and Harvard bridges hosts the Boston Pops Orchestra during the city's July 4th festivities. A free summer concert series and movie screenings also are offered in July and August. Pets on leash are allowed. Recreational activities are permitted. Picnicking is permitted. Food is available.
