Such innovations as ship houses and a ropewalk were among the yard's contributions. The USS Independence, a wooden-hulled, three-masted naval warship, was built and launched here in 1814. The visitor center features the exhibit Serving the Navy Fleet and a 10-minute orientation film. Guided tours are available.
