Cape Ann Museum is at 27 Pleasant St. This combination art and historical museum consists of several galleries that include collections of decorative arts and American antique furniture; paintings by Jerome Elwell, Susanna Paine, Gilbert Stuart and Alfred Wiggin; 19th-century toys and dolls; granite quarry artifacts, tools and historical photographs; carved jade; and Paul Revere silver. Among the collection of maritime artifacts is a 10-foot-tall, circa-1861 Fresnel lens from the Thacher Island Lighthouse Towers.

The museum is said to house the largest collection of paintings and works on paper by Fitz Hugh Lane, a native of Gloucester, who gained fame as a luminist maritime and landscape painter. The 1804 Captain Elias Davis House affords visitors an opportunity to glimpse into the lifestyle of a sea captain's family in early 19th-century New England. Changing exhibits relating to Cape Ann also are offered throughout the year.

Note: Photography and videotaping are not permitted inside the museum.

Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour minimum.
