Once the country estate of Blanche Ames, an artist and suffragist, and her botanist husband, Oakes, the site encompasses the family's three-story, 20-room stone mansion, built in 1910, as well as more than 20 miles of wooded trails. Hiking, horseback riding, disc golf and a number of other recreational activities can be enjoyed on the lovely 1,772-acre expanse, which was acquired by the commonwealth in 1971. A visitor center offers printed trail maps, exhibits about the Ames family, educational programming and special events. Guided tours are available. Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
