Northfield Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center, 2 mi. n. of SR 2 on SR 63, is an underground, pumped-storage hydroelectric facility topped by a 320-acre reservoir filled by the Connecticut River. During peak electrical demand, water is released from the reservoir through pump turbines to generate electricity.
A free fish-viewing area is open mid-May to mid-June. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are permitted.
Pet friendly (call for restrictions/fees.). Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
