Northfield Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center, 2 mi. n. of SR 2 on SR 63, is an underground, pumped-storage hydroelectric facility topped by a 320-acre reservoir filled by the Connecticut River. During peak electrical demand, water is released from the reservoir through pump turbines to generate electricity. A free fish-viewing area is open mid-May to mid-June. Hiking, mountain biking, fishing, cross-country skiing and snowshoeing are permitted. Pets on leash are allowed. Recreational activities are permitted. Camping is permitted. Picnicking is permitted.
Grounds free. Cross-country skiing $12.
Hours: Center open Wed.-Sun. 9-4:30, May 1 to mid-Oct.; Wed.-Sun. 9-4:30 for skiing and snowshoeing, mid-Dec. to mid-Mar. (weather permitting). Closed major holidays.
