Custom House is on the Derby St. waterfront at Salem Maritime National Historic Site. Known by its granite steps and large carved eagle, the structure was built in 1819 and was used to conduct port business and collect tariffs. Nathaniel Hawthorne worked at this site for 3 years while acting as surveyor of the Port of Salem. Guided tours are available.
Free. Reservations are required for guided tours.
Hours: Park rangers present a variety of guided tours at the national historic site daily; phone ahead for schedule. Closed Jan. 1, Thanksgiving and Christmas.
