Pros: Bill was an innocuous and amiable enough host. The premises were clean. The breakfast was tasty although predominantly high carb, high G.I. food. We were very relieved we had only booked one night's accommodation, and could move on to more hospitable and relaxing accommodation the next morning.
Cons: Despite reading 10 glowing previous reviews of Historic Jacob Hill Inn, our experience was devastatingly different. I am sorry to say this is the worst B&B or inn we have ever encountered in many years of travel around the world and, we felt, quite overpriced.Firstly, there was the disappointment that there is little "historic" about Historic Jacob Hill Inn - or at least the building in which we and the other guests stayed. We were informed by our hosts it is a renovated barn. It had, disappointingly, wooden veneer floors and glitzy modern fittings so the ambience was not "olde". The inn was also quite remote from places of interest in Massachusetts and Rhode Island. The hosts, Eleonora and her husband, Bill, came across, disconcertingly, as smug and self-absorbed. Wiithin minutes of our arrival they were lauding their own renovations and self-promoting their "award-winning breakfast granola". This is not the welcome you hope for when you arrive from afar and seek comfort, refreshments and rest after travelling. Most disturbing of all, however, was the furious emotional melt down by the hostess, Eleonora, whose focus on her financial interests rather than genuine warmth and cordial hospitality became evident when our originally used credit card - which had been charged and had already been paid out in full to our hosts for the night's accommodation, long in advance - was not presented as proof of our identity. (We proffered our passports and other valid credit cards we were carrying but these were apparently not acceptable to Eleonora.) Unable to regulate her emotions, in high-pitched voice, she harangued us at length and, rather ridiculously, threatened to evict us. Disappointingly, there was no apology the following morning for her late evening outburst. This obliterated any enjoyment of our stay in what would otherwise have been a peaceful rural backwater.
