Spencer State Forest is .5 mi. s. on SR 31. The 965-acre forest commemorates the Howe family. Elias Howe produced his first practical sewing machine in 1845. William Howe, inventor of the truss bridge, and Tyler Howe, inventor of the spring bed, were his uncles. Cross-country skiing, swimming and hiking facilities are available.
