Marine Biological Laboratory (MBL), on Water St., was established in 1888. The international center is devoted to improving the human condition through basic research and education in biology, biomedicine and environmental science. The Pierce Exhibit Center features hands-on educational displays about the MBL as well as live animal exhibits. Guided tours include a video presentation and a visit to the Marine Resources Center to view marine life used in research. Also highlighted is the Encyclopedia of Life (EOL), in which the MBL is a cornerstone institution. The EOL is an unprecedented effort to create a webpage documenting all 1.8 million named species of animals, plants and other forms of life on Earth. Parking, which is limited, is on-street and metered. Guided tours are available. Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
Free. Reservations are required for guided tours.
Hours: Exhibit center Mon.-Sat. 10-4:30, July-Aug.; Mon., Wed. and Fri.-Sat. 11-4, in June and Sept.; Mon., Wed. and Fri. 11-4, in May; Mon., Wed. and Fri. 11-3, Oct. 1-Columbus Day. Guided tours are given Mon.-Fri. at 1 and 2, late June-late Aug. Phone ahead to confirm schedule.
