AAA Editor Notes
Star Grottoes (Grutas de la Estrella) are s. of town via Mex. 55 (Carretera Taxco-Ixtapan de la Sal); about 12 km (7 mi.) s. of Tonatico, watch for the signed turnoff at Km marker 14.5. They are most dramatic during the July-September rainy season, when waterfalls cascade among such spectacular rock formations as “The Holy Family” and “The Human Ear.” Ancient Matlaltzinca Indians may have conducted religious ceremonies in the grottoes. Guided walking tours in Spanish proceed along a lighted, protected footpath.
Note: Accessing the caves requires climbing a number of steps.
