AAA Editor Notes
Shrine of the Pines is about 2.2 mi. s. at 8962 S. SR 37. Guided tours reveal this shrine created by R. W. Overholzer as a memorial to the white pine, the Michigan state tree. Furniture from tree stumps and roots gleaned from virgin stands of white pines cut in the early 1920s is displayed. All pieces were entirely worked by hand, and no metal fasteners or varnish were used.

Overholzer scraped the roots with broken glass, then rubbed each piece with handmade sandpaper and raw deer hide. From these pieces he fashioned beds, chairs, chandeliers and candlesticks. Particularly impressive is a dining room table with drawers carved from a 700-pound stump. A complete living room with a stone fireplace, dining room and game room are included. The museum is housed in a hunting lodge in a wooded park on the north bank of the Pere Marquette River. A wheelchair-accessible trail winds through the pines, and an observation deck overlooks the river. There also are opportunities for bird-watching.

Guided tours are available. Picnicking is permitted. Time: Allow 45 minutes minimum.
