Michigan Iron Industry Museum is at 73 Forge Rd.; the approximately .5-mi. museum entrance road is off US 41, about 1 mi. w. of SR 35. Forested ravines of the Marquette Iron Range provide the setting for this museum overlooking the Carp River and the site of the first iron forge in the Lake Superior region. Through exhibits, high-definition audiovisual programs and interpretive outdoor trails, the museum presents the history of Michigan’s three iron ranges from their geologic origins through the present and showcases the people who worked them. “The Yankee”—an 1860s vertical boiler locomotive from the Jackson Mine—as well as underground mine cars, mining equipment and artifacts also are displayed.

Time: Allow 1 hour, 30 minutes minimum.
