Fort Wilkins Historic State Park is 1 mi. e. at 15223 US 41. The 700-acre park contains the restored buildings of Fort Wilkins, the Army post established in 1844 to protect copper miners. The fort had no hostilities and was finally abandoned in 1870. Refurbished officers’ quarters and other buildings can be visited; wildflower and historical exhibits also are included. From late June to late August costumed staff members portray life at the fort in the 1800s. Copper Harbor Lighthouse also is on the grounds.
