Silver Lake State Park is off US 31 Hart or Shelby exit, then 7 mi. w., following signs. Of the park’s 2,936 acres, approximately 1,800 are covered in sweeping sand dunes. The dunes can be explored in off-road vehicles in the northern portion of the park or on foot in the center section. Silver Lake is a good place for swimming, fishing and boating. The 107-foot red brick Little Sable Point Light Station, built in 1873, overlooks a scenic portion of Lake Michigan. Lighthouse tours allow visitors to go up to the top of the structure. Phone ahead for off-road vehicle area hours and specific rules. Guided tours are available. Recreational activities are permitted.
Park entry fee requires a Recreation Passport (valid for 1 year and allows entry into Michigan state parks) $11 (per private in-state vehicle); $5 (per in-state motorcycle); $31 (per private out-of-state vehicle). Nonresident single-day pass $9 (per private out-of-state vehicle).
Hours: Daily 8 a.m.-10 p.m., Apr.-Oct. Lighthouse tours are given daily 10-5, mid-May through Sept. 30.
